The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce that on August 24, 2007, U.S. Ambassador Ravic R. Huso officially opened the American Section at the Champassak library, in Pakse, Champassak province.
The American Section is a small section of the library designed to serve the general public, especially children, to access information about the United States and the American people, including their culture, history and society, literature and performing arts, and economy. In particular, it is designed to help students and their families improve their English skills through reading. This corner of the library also contains information on issues of global concern, such as narcotics trafficking, protection of the environment, and terrorism. The area is equipped with a TV, a DVD player, a tape player, over 300 books, and some periodicals.
This is the third location supported by the U.S. Embassy to provide books and educational materials about the United States and global issues to the people of Laos. The first opened in January 2004 at the American Center, located on the campus of the Lao-American College. The second, the Lao-American Reading Center, opened in April 2006 inside the Luang Prabang library in Luang Prabang province.
