Mini Marathon Highlights Awareness on the Dangers of Drugs

Officials and participants run to raise awareness of the dangers of drug use

The U.S. Embassy cooperated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to support an early morning run/walk in central Vientiane on June 26 to commemorate the International Day Against Drugs. The event served both to raise awareness of the dangers posed by illicit drugs and to promote a healthy lifestyle that incorporates physical fitness. The sponsors hope that young people who make time for recreational sports will be less likely to become involved with drug abuse. The event drew approximately 2,000 participants. Youth organizations, families, and athletes joined Deputy Prime Minister Asang Laoly and Minister Soubanh Siritirath for the run/walk. The Embassy contributed approximately $2700 in goods and services to supplement UNODC’s sponsorship.
