On March 27, 2007 U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Mary Grace McGeehan officially donated gloves, face masks, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to the Ministry of Public Health, in conjunction with the World Health Organization. The equipment, worth an estimated 770 million kip (US $ 77,000), will be used to combat bird flu in Laos. Healthcare workers and veterinary staff will use the equipment to protect themselves and prevent the spread of infectious diseases, including avian influenza.
